Cancer deaths will double by 2030
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published a report which says that the cancer will top heart diseases and thus become the world’s number one killer. By 2030 the number of deaths caused by cancer will double!
The report says that the cancer incidence will significantly increase in low-income countries, because of tobacco use and Westernized lifestyles.
The report also predicts the following:
- 7 million cancer deaths will occur per year worldwide
- New cancer diagnosis will grow by 1% annually
- The countries that will “suffer” the most will be Russia, India and China
“40 years ago, cancer was a relatively rare disease,” says Peter Boyle, IARC director. “Times changed. When we think of low-resource countries, we think of communicable diseases as the big killers. But each year more people across the globe die of cancer than die of AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.”
One of the main reasons seems to be smoking, which is particularly spread in poor countries. Statistics say that 1.3 billion people smoke worldwide, and 12% of all cancer in poor countries are caused by tobacco use!
