Concerns on nanotech safety

December 11th, 2008 Posted in Nanomedicine News

Nanotechnology and all it’s divisions are growing every day, and it seems that nothing can stop that. While nanotechnology in general (especially bionanotechnology) has many positive sides, some parts of it aren’t so safe and positive. Using nanoparticles in food has been discussed many times and the conclusion is that it may have some negative connotations.

That’s why many European companies are pushing governmental agencies to work harder on testing and ensuring that tiny nanoparticles are safe and environmentally friendly. One of those companies is BASF, a chemical giant from Germany.
“What we find is that as this technology becomes more popular there are lots of questions in the minds of consumers and consumer advocates about just how safe these materials are,” said Raymond David, North American manager of toxicology for BASF.

In the United States, the National Research Council has published a report today which slams the governmental plans on this field. The report didn’t deal much with the nanoparticles and their current use, but the significance of making them safe for future generations.

“It’s unfortunate that GM foods haven’t been embraced as well as everyone had hoped. That, too, has tremendous promise. We want to make sure we don’t make that mistake again,” David said.
“Nanotechnology holds enormous promise in medical diagnosis, drug delivery and much more,” David said.
